This record was only available in mono on the Track Records and Barclay label it was never issued on the Track Records label in stereo. The recording was subjected to some poor mastering from Polydor for later re-issues, though it is argued that this record never had anyway near reasonable mastering in the first instance in the UK or France.  The application of "fake" stereo on the later Polydor issues to many of the tracks also remains a bone of contention, at least for those of us who bought these pressings hoping for more. None of these re-pressings that contain enhanced tracks are worth seeking out. Of the two, Track and Barclay, it is the latter that gets better press due to a slight difference in mastering but it should be noted that neither of these pressings are ideal and no re -issue of this title really presents this mono recording in the best light. 2013 did a re mastered release of this mono record with the UK track content [along with its US counterpart] from Sony Legacy. This Bernie Grundman mastered re-issue is close to the Track Records release rather than the slight variation of the Barclay record. Recommended purchase would be the re-issue from Sony as this possibly presents the listener with the best value return for outlay though audiophiles generally argue that the Barclay 1st pressing remains the better listen.

The release of Are You Experienced in the United States and Canada was on the Reprise Records label and the contents differed by way of the substitution of three of the original intended tracks. This appears to have been a record executive decision based on maxing out sales of this debut album. In place of Red House, Can You See Me and Remember the included previously issued singles of Purple Haze, Hey Joe and The Wind Cries Mary took their place. Where as the single 45's had charted very well in the UK they had had fared less well in the US.

The covers:
While Track Records brought us the most boring covers imaginable for both this BT 10 and the BT11 release all other issues to vinyl appear to be based on either the UK or US variants, except France! Yes, we do get a number of exceptions to these as can be seen on page 2.

The original Track Records front cover picture was sourced from the photographic session with the JHE by photographer Bruce Fleming at his Photo' studio in 12 Great Newport Street, London. This colour shot was used with just the albums title and this cover design appears to be that of Chas Chandler. The picture was from the second session with Fleming from 27th February 1967 as the initial session pictures that where rejected was a session using black and white film stock, 23rd February 1967.  Even this change to colour is not liked by many but it almost served its full purpose. In omitting the name of the band they failed to convey all the required information of a new band to the buying public. Later re pressings from Polydor Records did include Jimi's name across the top of the cover, this can be seen on the German soured albums in green text as already noted. The rear cover contained the track listing and a montage of Jimi, Noel and Mitch in black and white. It is believed that Hendrix was less than impressed by this cover! None the less this cover has become iconic over time, of course that's a matter of the content. Many images of Hendrix and Co. from these sessions appeared in the music papers of the day.

The much more exotic Reprise Records cover [the plan was for a textured sleeve which had this come off would have made this edition of the debut album so much more exotic] brings us two fine Karl Ferris pictures of the JHE. The fisheye outdoor front colour shot and a black and white studio shot. The front cover ticks all the boxes as we get the faces, album title and the name of the band. All important subjects for a debut album. The rear cover also contains the track listing for this variation on the original release. While the Fleming shots took place over two sessions, Ferris had the opportunity of four days, June 6th,7th, 8th and 10th 1967. The latter two are the outdoor sessions at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, London. The photographs used for the rear cover of the US edition of AYE was taken from the 7th and the front cover from the session dated the 10th.

MCA/ Universal used the Track records cover for their re release in 1997 and expanded this to a gatefold, including additional shots as per noted above. While the mono re issue from 2013 remained more faithful to that original and brought us a single sleeve.

The Karl Ferris cover was retained for all re issues except the 2010 Sony Legacy re press. this brought the usual front / rear together in a gatefold. The inner to this gatefold was made up of the same Harry Goodwin shots that can be found in the expanded 1997 expanded AYE pressing only this time with a slight alteration to the colourization of the photographs.

Meanwhile in France, someone else also thought that the UK cover was way too dull and came up with a totally different approach and design. Page 2 of AYE has images of the different designs to covers and label detail.

There is a variation on this Backtrack pressings with Mono, [cover] and Stereo [label]. This variant presents differences in the recording with regard to which tracks have been treated to "fake" stereo. As much as I don't want to go too far down the road of enhancement at this stage I will use this / these pressings as an example of how we get differences between what to all intent and purpose are the "same" album. These are my impressions from listening to these recordings for the umpteenth time mid 2014 along with Steve Elphick for a Ben Franklin update. If you took time to read the Doug Bell article regard enhancement he states that Red House on this album is mono, yet I hear slight, I emphasise slight, adjustment on both variations of Backtrack 10's Red House. I also hear slight application of enhancement on 3rd Stone on the mono - mono pressing but not on the stereo - mono album. While the same slight application can be heard on Can You See Me and Remember on the mono - mono album but not the stereo - mono version! The main differences , of which we have no doubt, between these variant pressings of BT 10 is that both albums have the same presentation on side one in that the tracks are presented as

Side A

1. stereo

2. stereo
3. mono
4. mono
5. stereo
6. stereo

While side B on the mono - mono album is presented as

1. stereo
2. stereo
3. mono
4. mono
5. stereo

Against side B on the stereo - mono as all five tracks presented as mono.

Welcome to the world of enhancement, Jimi Hendrix vinyl and a very odd attitude to customer satisfaction! It is important to note that enhancement is not an alternate mix of a song regardless of how heavy handed that application may be, it is simply a "fix" at the mastering stage of an albums production.

The Mono - Stereo pressing also has a slight variation in matrix information:

A. [2407011 hand etched] 612001 A//2V420 11 11

B. [2407010 hand etched] 612001 B [A which looks like it has an inverted triangle stamped over it]V1 42

Again it is worth noting that the enhancement on Polydor albums differs per pressing in that not all of the same tracks have enhancement and were they do the level of enhancement can and does differ in a number of instances. While the original Track Records sleeve did not have the JIMI HENDRIX text across the top front some later issues included this in white text. While both of the German sourced vinyl copies listed here did include that text it was printed in green. The French Plydor issue also has the green text on the front cover. It is difficult to date the re issues from Polydor as they it appears that each variant had let alone country had differing dates. I read that the French Polydor 2489 148 has an issue date of 1971 and the German 2459 390 as late as 1980! I'd take these dates with a pinch of salt.

The following album is the stereo version of this release and mastered from digital.  The mastering [Carlos Olms] on this album makes it worth seeking out. Both Red House and Remember are mono here.

I have no idea just what is contained in the grooves of this Greek Polydor pressing, can anyone enlighten me? The cover and label for this pressing can be seen on page 2. If we judge this release by it's cover then it will be enhanced from mono but for now this remains a guess.

While this next listed pressing becomes a double album with the addition of the three alternate tracks from the US pressing it also includes three 45RPM B sides by way of Highway Chile, Stone Free and 51st Anniversary. The gatefold sleeve which is based front and rear, on the UK Track records release gives 12 colourized shots of  Hendrix from the late Harry Goodwin. This release also carries a colour 8 page booklet with an essay from Dave Marsh. With the second entry basically a re release of this title we get coloured vinyl and a slight alteration to the booklet.

This is from an E Bay listing and clearly gives 1967 as a release date, I do have doubts but nothing to support those doubts about release date. Either way it does not detract from the fact that this is a scarce release, well thus far! Oh, it does have a different track listing to that of the US and European releases!
